The filling of any order requires some sort of directed picking. The operator(s) must typically be given directions such as what to obtain, the quantity, where to find it, when it needs to be done, and where to put it.
Currently, a large percentage of picking is done manually and the use of paper "Pick Sheets" is still quite common.
This manual approach tends to be exceptionally inefficient. It also consumes vast amounts of low skilled labor while not providing any assurance of high picking accuracy.
Many organizations must pick their items for less than case order fulfillment, or consolidation.
